So, do we call the little guy Pikachewie? Hamster Solo?

I have only a few minor complaints about EP7, and none of them is "It's a reboot" because of course it is. That's kind of the point IMO.
Won't likely catch this one on opening night. but I'll certainly be there that weekend.

(56,828 posts)at how vocal that small minority of MRA types were on Force Awakens - outrage over a black stormtrooper when you have a magical Force all around, two foot tall green frog dudes as Jedi masters and 7 foot tall wookies, and humanoids of every shape, size and color, but a black Stormtrooper is outrageous and means JJ Abrams is promoting White Genocide.

(63,214 posts)Within the context of the universe, I found the character to be as fully realized as any of the other principal players were in their respective debuts, and I found Ridley's performance to be terrific. No complaints.
While I'm at it, the three-minute scene between Finn and Poe in the TIE Fighter showed more real, human interaction than all 300 hours of the prequels combined.
Fuck the haters. If they don't want to see it, that's just more popcorn for me.

(4,138 posts)I don't know how you get bad performances out of Natalie Portman and Samuel L Jackson, but damned if George Lucas didn't manage it.
And yeah, I hope there's more Poe & Finn. They were great together, and I've liked Oscar Issac since he did that Greenwich Village Coen Brothers movie.

(63,214 posts)A friend of mine--also a hardcore Star Wars geek--made a cool observation.
For as much as he loves the original trilogy, his surprising single favorite moment occurs in EP7.
During the battle sequence on Takodana, one of the First Order troopers confronts Finn and shouts "Traitor!"
This is a terrific moment, packed with somewhat chilling significance. It tells us that, despite their conditioning, the troopers are still capable of feeling (betrayal, in this case), and that the trooper was able to recognize Finn on sight. This confirms that the troopers interact out of uniform, at least in some capacity.
This turns them from faceless, interchangeable drone to individual soldiers, giving depth to an otherwise throwaway army.
We see something similar, of course, in EP4, when Ben is disabling the tractor beam, and the two troopers talk about the latest model of some vehicle. But that's the kind of chat you could have with any coworker; in EP7, the exchange is personal and packed with history.
Also, when Ren is throwing his tantrum and the POV jumps to the hall outside. Two troopers walking toward his chamber stop, turn and head in the other direction. A simple moment, but very human.
Love it!

(56,828 posts)I have not watched all the cartoons, but they had some pretty good interaction between the clones/stormtroopers in the "downtime" they had between battles. Of course, during the Clone Wars, the "clones" were the good guys fighting with the Jedi until the Sith invoked Order 66.

(10,271 posts)Hayden Christiansen got a lot of grief for his performances, but he's on the record in interviews having said to the effect 'I got the job because I gave The Director WHAT HE WANTED.'
If you haven't bothered yet, watch Clone Wars animated series and Rebels. Lots of Anakin as the non-whiny Jedi badass he's kind of supposed to be, and later (in Rebels) snippets of a Vader who's still...conflicted enough that there's a chance for later redemption in Ep6.
Besides, Rebels is worth watching just because FINALLY we get us some motherfuckin' Admiral Thrawn onscreen, and yeah he's pretty much the genius badass he's supposed to be.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)but, have not gotten to Rebels yet. Liked most of what I remember on Clone Wars, though.
definitely agree that I blame Lucas more than I blame Christensen, Jake Lloyd, Natalie Portman or any of the others. (I liked Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan, though) That said, somebody did remind me a few years ago that if you watch the original movie, Luke is kind of a whiny punk for most of the movie, so I think Lucas was going for a "like father, like son" sort of thing in making Jake Lloyd in the first prequel and Anakin in the second into a whiny brat then whiny punk. Lucas went over the top with that, however, and it just felt wrong for young Darth Vader to be like that.

(46,725 posts)in our own military that is very white dominant, and they just don't understand why that isn't being reflected in JJ Abram's futuristic movie.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)at the enlisted "man" level is pretty diverse and has gotten more diverse these last 25 years. Enlisted women are even more diverse than men (nearly 50-50 between white/non-white)
https://www.statista.com/statistics/214869/share-of-active-duty-enlisted-women-and-men-in-the-us-military/
That said, the officer corps is definitely less diverse - for example, about 19% of the military is African American, but only about 9% of the officers are African-American.

(46,725 posts)believe that whites are better suited to lead. For those who came from racist homes or States, they have not been truly touched by the changing times. I trust that the environment will improve over the next 50 years, but that's no consolation to us in Florida who have to deal with the influx of retired officers who believe they can transfer their "rank has privileges" into civil community affairs.

(3,827 posts)I just hope it's better than Episode 7 - Was disappointed b/c of the New Hope-like story-lines.
Orrex
(63,214 posts)I'm cool with it being so similar to EP4 because IMO it's clearly an in-continuity reboot, to kick off the new characters within the existing universe.
Once you get past that objection, it's smooth sailing. Except for the Rathtars. They were stupid AF.

(3,827 posts)as some of the fans are saying. Abrams could have tweaked Rey's character a little bit more- that's all I'm saying.
This year I haven't gone to those spoiler sites and read about the leaks for The Last Jedi- I should have done that for TFA. haha
I pretty much knew everything that was going to happen. Actually, I am very surprised at how little the new trailer reveals- But my mind has a few guesses about Rey and Kilo's 'relationship' in TLJ.

(13,340 posts)I am a member of both the 501st and the Rebel Legion (costuming clubs). It's safe to say we are all hardcore fans. I'd say iabout 90% of my local garrison/base at least liked TFA, and probably 75% loved it. On the fan sites i frequent, there is a loud haters contingent, but polls tell a different story... with the vast majority of fans rating it at leat 7/10, and most rating it 8 or 9 out of 10. The haters are a vocal minority. For me, it's in the top 3 Star Wars movies.

(46,725 posts)I still don't know who the bad guy is. I'm still convinced that Kylo Ren is following plans set out for him by his own father. But, I don't think Luke is the bad guy, either. I think he's a reluctant Obi Wan.
Of course, I think there is alot of backstory between the main characters that we don't know about.

just kidding.
I have tried to avoid spoilers this time out for Last Jedi and speculation about this movie and movie 9. I heard some theories on who Snoke really is when The Force Awakens came out, but I've tried to avoid it since
