Shadow of the Vampire with Malkovich and Dafoe is amazing.

The original Japanese version of the Ring (Ringu) is also quite worthwhile.

Wolf Creek ( Australian ) is gory scary and terrifying if you like bloody nasty films.

Plan Nine From Outer Space is one of the funniest freaking films , unintentionally , ever made.

But the original version of "The Haunting" is the one that always struck me as the scariest.

The banging on the walls, the door breathing in and out, the sets, etc...

Your own imagination is what scares you, not one ghost or monster is ever shown, it's the things that go bump in the night and can't be seen that is so effective, the movie just sets the stage that your own monsters inhabit.

And that revelation that she wasn't holding your hand because she was on the other side of the room........

Grace Markway, the professor's wife, was played by Lois Maxwell, who was long cast as Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond films.

Remember the scene at the top in the library? The little trap door?

The one Boo surprise in the film.

Another scary part, Eleanor staring at that texture? On the wall that looked like a face.

There's probably more I can't remember, I've only seen it four times, one of those movies I only watch once a decade so it's always effective.

A classic starring Vincent Price and a lobster type parasite which feeds on fear. Apparently when it was released some theaters had something set up in the theaters that would vibrate seats of the audience members at certain points in the movie.

The Tingler remains most well known for a gimmick called "Percepto!", vibrating devices in some theater chairs which activated with the onscreen action.

I never saw it in the theater, just on Dialing for Dollars or Morgus the Magnificent. But I had a bizarre crush on Vincent Price as an adolescent and I watched this every chance I got. I'm certain that strange LSD scene is what got me a little fixated on skulls.

He had some kind of connection to Nebraska and would do public service announcements and promotions for various arts in Lincoln. He had a few others that I enjoyed. He made some cheesy ones of course, but was good in them regardless.

The first time I saw it was right after I had been to The Field Museum, and spent a whole lot of time in the Egyptian area. I was pretty young. Later that night, every noise I heard sounded like dragging footsteps, heading toward my bedroom. The movie still gives me a bit of a atavistic chill.

Carpenter made what he called his "Apocalypse Trilogy", The Thing, Prince Of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness.

He sure made some good films back in the day, he wrote a sequel to The Thing from what I've read but alas it was not to be.

I know it's not traditional Halloween fare, but it's been a Starsky family tradition for nearly 20 years. Pop up a huge bowl of popcorn, get the grandparents, kids, dogs, and cats together in the family room, and watch Kurt Russell and the gang come completely unglued in the Antarctic.
