http://www.bdlive.co.za/national/labour/2014/06/30/numsa-to-push-ahead-with-strike-despite-ill-effects-on-the-economyThis is a BIG ass trade union in South Africa. The UAW brought some of the leadership here to middle Tennessee for a conference and a Q&A which I was able to participate in and the guys from NUMSA were IMPRESSIVE.
One thing Comrade Jim said in the article I thought was particularly striking. "When the economy is bad the bosses make money. When the economy is good the bosses make money." That's it in a nutshell.

My question at this point becomes: Is this left turn and revolutionary talk just a tactic in an economistic strategy of getting higher wages? Or is it truly a revolutionary surge with the goal of taking political power?

A demand for a living wage is political, because it is politics that allowed such conditions 20 years into a democracy, Vavi said

Interesting dynamic developing. While the strike is gaining support with other big trade union organizations in other industries, there seems to be a fear that that support will come with the strings of "economism" attached.
