Related: About this forumErroll Garner Plays 'Misty' 🎹
(Wiki, Ed.) Erroll Louis Garner (June 15, 1921 Jan. 2, 1977) was an American jazz pianist and composer known for his swing playing and ballads. Garner's instrumental ballad "Misty" has become a jazz standard. First recorded in 1956 with Mitch Miller & his orchestra, it played a prominent part in the 1971 motion picture Play Misty for Me. Scott Yanow of Allmusic calls Garner "one of the most distinctive of all pianists" and a "brilliant virtuoso".
Garner received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and his live album Concert by the Sea 1st released in 1955, sold more than 1 million copies by 1958. Garner was born, along with twin brother Ernest in Pittsburgh, PA on June 15, 1921. He began playing piano at the age of three. His elder siblings were taught piano by a "Miss Bowman." From an early age, Garner would play anything she had demonstrated. Garner was self-taught and remained an "ear player" all his life, never learning to read music.
At age 7, he began appearing on the radio station KDKA in Pgh with a group and by age 11, Garner was playing on Allegheny riverboats. In 1937 he joined local saxophonist Leroy Brown. Garner moved to NYC in 1944. He briefly worked with bassist Slam Stewart, and in 1947 played with Charlie Parker. Garner is credited with a superb musical memory. After attending a concert by Russian classical pianist Emil Gilels, Garner returned to his apartment and was able to play a large portion of the performed music by memory... I loved that movie Play Misty for Me, watched it so many times. At the time, it set the bar for scary movies (along with See No Evil).
