Begin The Beguine - By Cole Porter - Artie Shaw Swing Band 🎷

The beguine is a dance and music form, similar to a slow rhumba. "Begin the Beguine" became a best-selling record in 1938, peaking at no. 3, skyrocketing Shaw and his band to fame and popularity.

- Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 – Oct. 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Many of his songs became standards noted for their witty, urbane lyrics, and many of his scores found success on Broadway and in film.. Classically trained, he was drawn to musical theatre.
After a slow start, he began to achieve success in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway musical stage.. His numerous hit songs include "Night and Day", "Begin the Beguine", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Well, Did You Evah!", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "You're the Top". He also composed scores for films from the 1930s to the 1950s...

Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists", Shaw led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Though he had numerous hit records, he was perhaps best known for his 1938 recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine."...

Didn’t know a anything about the bequine, even though I have heard the song many times. I read somewhere that some felt Porter’s music wasn’t serious. I guess the artistic quality of catchy music and lyrics are always questioned.

I love his stuff. Night and Day is a favorite. The swaying of the tune is perfect for the lyrics.

...that's not a beguine rhythm.
The ride cymbal is standard swing. There's no 3/2/2 feel. Just a straight 1,2,3,4.
I really like how the beguine rhythm feels.
