(19,201 posts)The woman I was dating at that time in my life used to play that song all the time.
No, she didn't catch me, but I'll always remember that song.
Love that Funk, though. Always have. Pretty strange for a white boy from a New York cow town, but Motown and Funk have always appealed to me.

There are s few tells:
1. The wah on the clavinet. He's not working the pedal while playing.
2. There's nobody playing the talk box guitar, which to me, is one the the critical aspects of the tune.
3. Near the end, Chaka's voice is blasting sway (Baby, baby baby, yeah) while she's holding the Mike about hip high, facing the crowd.
They played the weekly rock show in our city's skating rink during the summers while I was in HS & college. Too long a story, but we had backstage passes every week, so we got to meet Rufus & talk with them several times. Every one of them was as nice as could be.

(2,486 posts)Because it is over dubbed with the studio version, the old live concert versions are usually not up to par, I pick the studio versions almost every time because of the sound of the recording. And this because I love seeing Chaka Khan at this time in her life

(65,045 posts)A couple of the guys still called her YM, her original initials, though she'd been using Chaka since 8th grade.
She's a few years older than me, but was still in her teens when we met her.
I love her backing parts in this song: (The video also features Nile Rodgers.)
