Forget the history stuff; that's over here:

Wed Apr 3, 2024: On this day, April 3, 1860, the Pony Express began operation.

This is about the song "Pony Express." Take it away, Ted Nugent.

Don't hate. He used to be a rock and roller.

Yeah, TN is not my favorite person. I post only because, other than a theme song for the movie, which starred Charlton Heston, TN's tune may be the only one around about the Pony Express. Maybe someone wrote something in 1860. I'd have to ask the Library of Congress.

Here is a link to the guidelines: Fri Feb 25, 2022: Welcome! Important guidelines and tips - please read before posting.

We read there {updated, because I don't know how to read}:

We won't all agree on what's good music, and that's fine. It would be a very boring world if we all agreed.

But it's important that people here respect others' preferences in music, both specific music and the artists who created it. Even if you don't like an artist and feel you can't appreciate their music as a result, please understand that other people might not share your opinion of the artist..and even if they do, they might able to separate the artist and the music enough to still enjoy the music. Please accept that and don't feel you have to weigh in with negative opinions and comments. No one has to look at any of the threads here, let alone listen to any music or artists they don't like.

If you want to alert, okay, but this post is about the song, not the political beliefs of the person who wrote and performed the song.

Thanks.

Before he ... changed ... Ted Nugent cranked out some decent rock and roll.

Thanks again, and good morning.

2. Sigh. Posting to remind people of the guidelines I pinned. Please don't turn this into a trash-Nugent thread. Also,

I'd appreciate it if people would not post music by an artist almost guaranteed to get a negative reaction here UNLESS that artist has created a LOT of music worth appreciating, so other people will understand why you appreciate the music even if you dislike the artist otherwise.

4. If people want to alert on the post and have it removed, okay. I can handle that.

I separate the artist (so to speak) from the work he has done. "Journey to the Center of the Mind" was a seminal tune when it came out. It got lots of airplay, and I can still listen to it.

"Chinatown" is easily a top-ten movie, but Roman Polanski doesn't set a high standard for the human race.

John Lennon didn't exactly treat Cynthia too well: Cynthis Lennon divorce

TN wrote the only song about the Pony Express I can think of, and back when it came out, I listened to it. I have it on open reel tape. Now, I wouldn't give him the time of day.

{edited} There was a movie: Pony Express (film)

The leading man? Charlton Heston.

Thanks for writing, and good morning.

5. I agree about separating the artist from the art. I was just sighing because I know from experience that

posting anything by Ted Nugent will usually bring a lot more negative reactions than posts about, say, Clapton or Morrison, who have contributed a lot more to popular music.

I do think the Pony Express was great. In fact, the first really historic building I can remember seeing was a Pony Express station not far from my grandfather's farm. But a post about the Pony Express in the Lounge or GD would get a lot more views and discussion of the Pony Express, though posting that music video in either of those forums would get you bashed, and I couldn't weigh in there to point to the MA guidelines.

And yes, I know about how John Lennon sometimes treated women, including Cynthia. (I mentioned that once to someone here, a DUer who didn't want some other artists posted here but had said John was her hero.) Lennon's flaws, like Bowie's, are almost never mentioned here because of their artistic contributions, but I saw an absolutely brutal commentary on Bowie in a liberal magazine after he died.

If you want to continue posting Ted Nugent's music despite the usual reaction, I'd appreciate it if you'd also link to the guidelines I posted.

I am grateful that you at least didn't have Nugent's name in the thread title, which would have brought in a lot of comments from people who don't usually post here but did spot his name while skimming Latest threads.

6. Just saw your edited OP. Thanks for linking to the guidelines! NO ONE should alert on your OP, or any

other OP that I've ever seen you post. But if anyone mistakenly alerts on it and if it's hidden by a colossally wrong jury decision, I'll do everything I can to get that decision reversed.

There's getting to be a lot of hypersensitive folks at DU these days. I've been on juries where the alerts were just plain nonsense.

8. Mahatmakanejeeves, I appreciate your linking to the guidelines, but I just read your description of them & it's wrong

You wrote, in the edited OP:

I have been requested to note that the guidelines frown on discussing performers who went on to be pretty disgusting people.

The guidelines say nothing of the kind.

What I did say in the guidelines:

We won't all agree on what's good music, and that's fine. It would be a very boring world if we all agreed.

But it's important that people here respect others' preferences in music, both specific music and the artists who created it. Even if you don't like an artist and feel you can't appreciate their music as a result, please understand that other people might not share your opinion of the artist..and even if they do, they might able to separate the artist and the music enough to still enjoy the music. Please accept that and don't feel you have to weigh in with negative opinions and comments. No one has to look at any of the threads here, let alone listen to any music or artists they don't like.

I have that in the guidelines specifically so people won't feel they can't ever post artists usually considered badly flawed by most DUers. I don't want those threads to devolve into DUers arguing over how much of an asshole some artist.is, whether their music should ever be allowed on DU, etc. Especially when the artists are legendary as musicians and some of their music is considered iconic.

The additional point I was making to you in replies here is that Nugent is not usually considered to have as much musical talent as some artists DUers like to bash because of those artists' behavior and/or political opinions. So posts with his music are tougher to defend on purely musical grounds.

I'm surprised you misread my guidelines and my posts here that way.

(unless you'd prefer that I leave them) because there won't be any need for them.

Btw, there's actually one Kid Rock song I like, though I dislike most of his music (and I think there should have been criminal penalties for his cover of a Bad Company song I love). But I won't post that one song of his I like here because I can't defend him otherwise, and I don't think the song's all that good.

13. I'm old enough to own my mistakes. Leave them up if you'd like. I was wrong, because I do that a lot.

Hmmm. When is Gary Glitter's birthday coming up?

Sheesh, did I get some grief for that one.
