Danny's Song -- Loggins & Messina vs Anne Murray (Which one is your favorite?)

"Danny's Song" is a song written by American singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins, as a gift for his brother Danny for the birth of his son, Colin. It first appeared on an album by Gator Creek[1] and a year later on the album Sittin' In, the debut album by Loggins and Messina. The song is well remembered for both the Loggins and Messina original, as well as for Anne Murray's 1972 top-ten-charting cover.

while growing up. Sittin’ In was the first album I bought with my own money. I remember telling my dad how much I loved Kenny and him telling me that Kenny would always be a lot older than I would be...I could not wrap my head around that as a kid. Surely I would grow up and Kenny would fall in love with me! When I was 17, I bought a one way plane ticket to see him in Berkeley. I thought I was so smart to do that never thinking that I would need a ticket home. Thank goodness, my grandparents were living down there then and helped me find my way back to reality. My dad was so pissed that I’d bought a plane ticket and just left town.

After BS'ing my folks that I was going w/friends and had a proper ride, I actually took BART alone out to Daly City and then a bus to the Cow Palace w/o even considering that buses would stop running well before the show was over ... and I probably had like $5 in my pocket ... and it ain't a great neighborhood down there ... lol ...

But damn if Anne's version doesn't bring back great memories of riding around the Bay Area, singing along to it with Mom in the VW Squareback when it came on KFRC ... hers was the much bigger hit version, and was pretty inescapable for about 6 months when I was a little boy ...

So went with 'both'

all the verses. That’s my only bitch with it....it makes sense I guess, because the song is definitely written from a man’s point of view. “Seems as though a month ago I was Beta Chi, never got high, oh I was a sorry guy”...love that line.

Speaking of old songs that impact a little boy...my 13 year old son brought up Dolly Parton’s “Here You Come Again” yesterday on his phone and said “Mama, this is the catchiest song! I just love it”. It warmed my heart.

Another song I totally loved ... Or maybe the very next record. Anyway, I saw her with Linda Ronstadt, Elvin Bishop, and Beach Boys in 1978 I think it was, in Oakland, my 2nd concert ever.

I remember seeing Anne Murray in Miami in 1980... This was right after the Canadians smuggled out six Americans from Iran during the hostage crisis..
At the end of the concert one gent yelled out THANK YOU for being Canadian!!! She cried..
A real class act..
