Jackson Browne:

Eagles:

Browne and Glen Frey wrote the song and it was a hit for the Eagles. Browne's release several years later did not do as well.

Both versions are in the same key and have remarkably similar arrangements. It makes me wonder why Browne decided to record it. In covering a song, an artist can look for nuances or re-interpretations that provide a very different perspective and put their own stamp on the song. A straight-up cover seems odd to me given Browne's astounding talents.

When I was younger, I learned to play the standard, "When Sunny Gets Blue." On the back cover of our copy of the sheet music, the publisher listed aver 75 recordings of the song. It's a rather wordy song with a lot of notes and chromatic harmonies that don't provide a lot of flexibility for the arrangement. You kind of have to just do the song and sit down. Most of those recordings listed "sound" similar. Regardless, I'm certain that the song's writers, Marvin Fisher and Jack Segal, were happy with the royalties generated by all those covers!
