(33,643 posts)Fact, this is arguably THE seminal Americana album, in many ways ...

(11,802 posts)Byrds, Burrito's, Solo....And if it wasn't for the Crowe's and a couple tabs of LSD..... who knows might never have found him
But seriously!

(33,643 posts)Now why am I not surprised you used to drop acid?
Not that I'd know ANYthing about that, mind you ...
I was a big hair band guy. Then Nirvana came around and destroyed my scene. I started drifting towards heavier shit White Zombie, Metallica, fucking Ministry ferchristsake! Went to my buddies place and dropped for the first time. Actually the third time, but the first time it took. (No drug I ever took, took the first time. I know, bizarre) Anyway, the second BC record had just come out. He put that on while I was experiencing tracers and breathing walls and growing grass, etc.... Life changing moment. No shit. Truly. I forgot all about metal at that point and started digging backwards. Crowes were influenced by Zeppelin and the Faces and the Pie. Who Influenced them? Howlin Wolf and Muddy and Sam Cooke etc, etc, etc. Truly a life changing moment. And more importantly, a voice changing moment. I sounded kinda like Davey Vain when I was doing the metal thing. LSD moved me beyond the constrictive elements of metal and let me find me self. If I could only find good doses nowadays........

(33,643 posts)Cause I'll ask you to put 'em on, and imagine ...
You're 20 ... your buddy's driving, you're in the front seat, with the seat tilted way back, and the moon roof is open ...
And in fact, you're on Highway 120 in California, descending into Yosemite Valley, at night, winding through the pines ... there's a billion freaking stars, cause there's zero light pollution ... you know the kinda sky I mean ...
And you're melting into your freaking seat ... and this comes on, and you're hearing it for the first time cause the album JUST came out and you brought the tape along for the drive ...
EDIT: Replaced original with a better-sounding mix ... though slightly different lyrics from the original ... this is more how it sounded at the time

(11,802 posts)Took a couple decades to appreciate. When it came out, The Cure was for....well, you know where that's going. Don't want to offend the terminally offended. But yeah, I can totally dig the experience you're so laying down. Reminds me of a story.......
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)but as the decade drew on, and I went off to college, I became way more alternative ... as one was supposed to do in the 80's
But I still liked the GOOD (in my esteem) hard rock bands ... Metallica continued to kill it, G N' R, of course ... and I thought Dr. Feelgood was like ... 100X better than anything Crue had ever done ... but I didn't like 'hair bands' per se, gotta admit ... that shit wasn't cool to me then. Tesla was the most 'hair band' group that came out then that I dug. Mechanical Resonance was the shizz.
And that song tripping ... really loud ... with someone driving you around ... with an awesome sky to look at at the time ... it don't get a lot better than that
Did you listen before or after I changed the video link? Cause my second one sounds way better, and the lyrics are slightly changed in it, and make it even more perfect ...

(9,666 posts)Their transition was in full force. I remember being disappointed after buying SOTR -- it was such a departure from their previous stuff -- it took some time before I saw the light. I can only imagine what it would've been like being savvy to that scene when it was happening.
Good to see you're on a Byrds/Gram Parsons/Clarence White groove, GR.

(11,802 posts)I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as a lot of the people here. It's an older crowd. I'm a 70's affecianado, but I was born in '71. This isn't my generations music. So a lot slips through the cracks, dig? I thank you for the tip!

(3,064 posts)Great LP that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
This was the LP that Hillman came into his own as a songwriter.
And Clarence White's on board for two decidedly country tunes, " Time Between "and "The Girl With No Name."

(4,138 posts)I'm not sure if it's an original, but it's definitely the version that the Byrds based theirs on. Some terrific harmonies.
