I like every version I've heard (although I'm sure I haven't heard them all). My favorite is the Rufus Wainwright version which was on "Shrek". I also really like Jeff Buckley's version and k.d. lang's. I like Leonard Cohen but I'm not crazy about the way he sings this particular song.

5. I'm a huge Cohen fan but when I want to listen to this song I almost always turn to Buckley

Comes close to some real "white bone" as my fiction writing workshop teacher used to say

Raw guttural in your face emotion to some of the best lyrics written.

6. The original is great, credit where it's due to the writer ... but Buckley's is a rare case ...

Of a cover actually outshining an original version. It's absolutely breathtaking.

And he wasn't just a cover artist ... I actually like this original even more than Hallelujah ... the ultimate 'regret' song I must say ... got me through a few breakups over the years ...

Jeff was taken from us way too soon ... what an incredible talent is on display on his one and only album. His just randomly drowning like that too, for no good reason ... he had a bit of alcohol in his system but not enough to be 'wasted' or anything ... man, it was just an unbelievably tragic accident ... and it happened just a few months after I bought the disc ... it was like my favorite album at the time and it hit me like a punch to the gut when I heard the news. The only other time I remember something like that happening is when Randy Rhoads died right when I was massively into Ozzy in my High School years.

only more fitting as he died so tragically. Cohen though....what an amazing song.
