Good luck everyone, I really look forward to this one!

(36,281 posts)Seriously, I have never taken a phone photo in my life. I have an ancient phone I use to talk to people and a camera I use to take photos. I wonder how many others are similar? Are phone photos a "technological leveler" for people with basic phones that lack camera technology or people who simply use their phones and cameras for different purposes?

(14,559 posts)Seriously tho, when I was in the Electronics business I called on Motorola and was told by a design that cell phones hadn't been designed for conversations since the '80s. It's gotten better with digital towers (everything's better digital).

(36,281 posts)The only reason I have one at all is because my wife insists. The damn thing terrifies me whenever it rings.. Does work well as an egg timer, though.

(3,170 posts)I was shooting with a Canon R5 and 6dmii, but for some reason I always feel compelled to take a few cell phone pics too, probably so I can share them immediately, (even though there was no cell signal there). I might change my entry, because I also have a great shot taken in the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine. It was a hard decision.
I don't think of my smart phone as a telephone. I think of it more as an amazing battery powered little computer that accesses the entire world, and it just happens to make phone calls too. The phone calls are probably the least of it.
I'm still amazed every time I make a video call to my kid. We are living the Jetsons. (BTW, George Jetson was born in 2022).

(51,459 posts)the shape yours shows? My turtle photo was also taken on a Galaxy 9+. I used postimage.org to upload it to DU. I can change the pixel size, but not the shape. How do you do it?

(3,170 posts)On my Note9 there are icons for the settings at the top of the screen when in photo mode. One of them is for the aspect ratio. I have mine set to 16x9.

I always take both my phone and Canon camera with me down to the water's edge when I think there might be a good sunset. I shoot with both. The colors change very fast. Turned out I only got these blues with my phone. OnePlus 8T.

(34,075 posts)The photography class was black and white film. I was out hiking without my camera. The lighting was great so I did a few test shots with my cell phone to see how they would look in black and white when I came back with my camera. The photos is the original color cell phone version of one I later returned and captured with B&W film.

(8,904 posts)My latest project is a continuation of something I started in 1975. Surprisingly, today there are groups dedicated solely to this type of photography. I was not aware of a specific name for it back then, but now has a formal name: ICM, Intentional Camera Movement.
Being a camerahead, I had never considered using the phone for this purpose, rarely even use it for communication purposes, but more as a personal assistant. Thanks to Peggy for broadening my photography horizons!
Some may wonder how the lunatic made these photos. Here is a view of my setup. Programmable LED light string and Makita drill with LG V20 securely attached, and Zodiac Bluetooth remote trigger.
I follow up outside with my camera which is a different animal altogether, at least in daylight. It is very difficult to get the light level down enough to allow camera movement to register, so requires Neutral Density filters in the range of 6-10, something very difficult with a phone. If you would like to see the preliminary state of the project with my original 1975 photos: https://jamesdevore.smugmug.com/60-YEAR-JOURNEY-IN-PHOTOGRAPHY/A-LITTLE-BIT-OF-EVERYTHING/ICM-INTENTIONAL-CAMERA-MOVEMENT

(33,587 posts)I had a photo of a Steely Dan contest I was going to use. (Below) But I was in Manhattan, walking from dinner with my wife when we passed this street with it's holiday lights still on. A lucky happenstance for this contest.

(15,943 posts)Bee Here Now was shot using Galaxy 9+ in Houston while visiting my friend. She grows amazing flowers.
I also had a heck of a time figuring out how to post using Imgur and an iPad. Finally got it figured out after trial and error for about 15 minutes.
Thank you California Peggy for the opportunity to only using cell phones! Such a great idea!

(8,264 posts)I rarely use my good camera anymore. These days, my phone documents most of the strange and beautiful things I see. I do use the phones exposure/light settings to avoid captures that get washed out by too much light. (Press and hold your finger on the screen, adjust to your liking

The rubber ducks were a chance encounter - a happy coincidence back in 2017. I should mention that the entire intersection was covered in rubber ducks. They stretched out in four directions - it was great.
Thanks for the submissions this month. I always enjoy seeing them.
(ps. I resized my photo after entering max edge 1024.)

(3,414 posts)I visited there for a couple of hours on my road trip from Austin, TX to Puyallup, WA. I was moving my residence from TX to WA, so I had my cats and valuables with me. I wanted to stay longer, but I couldn't on this trip. Crater Lake is truly one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Photographs don't do it justice.
