(86,775 posts)I was traveling through Yellowstone, when I worked there, to the Buffalo Ranch at Lamar Valley for an overnight class. I stopped because these flowers caught my eye so I had to stop and check it out. There is a pullout about 1000ft from the Mt Washburn Trailhead parking area on the south face, which is next to a small runoff sort of spring where an abundance of unusual wildflowers grow in a little microecosystem along the waterstream. It pools a little at the pullout and a tiny marsh has formed there increasing the opportunity for additional species like rein orchids.
The Lewis' Monkey Flower, first documented by Merriweather Lewis, is distinguished from the "regular" Monkey Flower by its color - pink - where the regular type is yellow and can be seen all summer, especially around thermal areas and waterways in and around the park.
