We wanted to see the crater that had been caused by a meteor in Arizona, I think.

And I wanted to see the Antelope Canyon! My photo tells the story of why.

11. The Chinese myth of leaping over the dragon gate

Legend has it that the hero Dayu built a high and steep “Dragon Gate” in order to control the flood. Forceful water brought many carp down the river and the carp could not swim back. The carp complained to Dayu. His wife, Jade Emperor’s daughter, spoke with her father on behalf of the carp. Jade Emperor promised that if those carp could leap over the Dragon Gate, then they would become mighty dragons. Thus, in early spring every year, herds of golden carp would gather under the Dragon Gate and try to leap over the gate to become dragons.

Nowadays, “Carp Leaping over the Dragon Gate” symbolises good wishes for overnight achievements, advancements and life changing moments.

The display of this myth was included in the Chinese Lantern Festival in Raleigh last December where my entry shot was taken.

13. Lewis' Monkey Flower...

I was traveling through Yellowstone, when I worked there, to the Buffalo Ranch at Lamar Valley for an overnight class. I stopped because these flowers caught my eye so I had to stop and check it out. There is a pullout about 1000ft from the Mt Washburn Trailhead parking area on the south face, which is next to a small runoff sort of spring where an abundance of unusual wildflowers grow in a little microecosystem along the waterstream. It pools a little at the pullout and a tiny marsh has formed there increasing the opportunity for additional species like rein orchids.

The Lewis' Monkey Flower, first documented by Merriweather Lewis, is distinguished from the "regular" Monkey Flower by its color - pink - where the regular type is yellow and can be seen all summer, especially around thermal areas and waterways in and around the park.
