January 2013 Photo Contest Poll

Hello everyone!

I looked over past contest themes and came up with the list below. Hope you find something you can get excited about.

Still Life: B&W or Color.

Close-ups (Macro): Color only. Any subject.

Lost or discarded items: Things people have lost or discarded. Color or B&W

Food: Make us hungry! Color only.

Cemetery/Graveyards: Black & White only.

Busy: busy at work, busy at play; busy streets, busy people (walking, talking, etc..) busy animals, etc.. Busy doing something. Color or B&W.

This poll will run for one week. Votes will determine theme. In the event of a tie, host will have deciding vote.

On January 2nd we will have a theme and at that time I will post the schedule for submissions/prelims/finals. You'll have 13 days from then to get your shot.

January is kind of busy for me, so I'm hoping an early start helps me stay on target.

Thank you!

Solly Mack

Nice choice. Busy is a pretty cool idea, but like lost or discarded items, too. Cemetary, I could handle that if the weather holds up.

I'll be mulling this over for awhile.

Thanks for getting us off to a quick start.

Still Life photography is a grouping/placement of (usually) inanimate objects (cut flowers and fruit are not uncommon in a still life) the photographer puts together/arranges in harmony (for composition) and shoots. (with particular consideration to light/shadows, focus, color, contrast, etc..) Usually done indoors, but not always. The photographer has complete control of the shot because the photographer controls all aspects of the photo. (subject, placement, lighting, etc..)

I'm sure a still life can be created in a graveyard but Still Life isn't confined to the graveyard nor does it mean graveyard/cemetery shots.

Did that help?

the subject.

My first entry in the first photo contest was a cemetery shot. It was over processed to give it a sickly deathlike look.

This is a newer version of that shot.

How can you take a picture of something that's lost? Isn't that the definition? If it's lost, you can't see it?

Somewhere in Canada, on the way from Detroit to Niagara Falls there is a little pair of shoes that's been lying by the side of the road since 1949. Drop me a PM if you find them.

New Orleans has an undercurrent of the macabre. I've never been to a graveyard there, but I can only imagine how voodoo believers enter eternity.

Doesn't Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails have an old mausoleum door on his recording studio there?

I wanted cemeteries so I could experiment in B&W, but if you're going there, I'll take lost and discarded. At least there's lots of garbage around here. LOL.

There are peoples and countries that never heard of Halloween where photos of graveyards, esp. in b/w, have originated.

I wouldn't even have to get cold, but given the impetus, I think I may. The B&W would make it look colder and deader.

These days the sun is quite low in the sky all day... and night.

Hmmm
