Related: About this forumI often look to movies and paintings to inform my photography.
Tonight I have been looking at Edward Hopper's paintings. I really like his interiors and spare compositions. He's a good person to study in preparation for the longer nights to come. The urban settings, and the sense of isolation makes me think he was influenced by the movies at the time.

(22,380 posts)Hopper inspires me so very much, not so much my paltry photography, but in how I look at shapes, placement, subject matter, negative space in just about everything I lay my eyes on.
Toulouse Lautrec does the same thing for my appreciation of all those things, and then, there always is Vincent.
I hope it won't annoy you if I go and find the link to the marvelous run-down of his work in "Starry starry night..." and add it to my response.
I think pointing us to where we can learn to see - by looking at the huge wealth of work by the masters of color/space and presentation of it - is valuable.

(4,483 posts)Saw the last retrospective at the Whitney. Museums are a great way to get inspiration for your photography even if not in a literal sense.

(60,074 posts)"A Touch of Evil" by Orson Welles had a great effect on how I see.
The opening visual in this clip shows good composition and great storytelling.
