A fungus. It looks different underneath but I didn't want to be on my back in the mud. (or get in the water or break a piece of its 'home' off...or touch it) These were small and close to the ground on dead or low lying branches.

I've been out counting birds for the great backyard bird count and I've come across some other things in the process. lol
I only count for 15 minutes or 30 minutes. Todays count will be for 30 minutes. Today is the last day.
I sit, I count (and take photos)....then I go exploring to see what other birds & things I can find.
I'm going out in a bit to get my count for today.

(90,789 posts)Thought you might want to see them. Most of these specimens are no bigger than a dime. They can grow all clumped together and some do get as big as a quarter.

Also, what a great way to spend the day - counting birds, taking photos, counting birds then taking more photos! Sounds like heaven!
