The deer have been back this morning

just as it stopped raining.

There is a buck--with an injured antler--see the red tip?

and I think, the buck who was fighting him the other day,

there were a total of six of them moving across our hill.

How many can you find in this photo?

The antler is not injured, he's just rubbing off the velvet. Scuba Feb 2014 #1
Really? Looks raw to me in this close up mnhtnbb Feb 2014 #2
The velvet is largely blood vessels, covered with a soft fuzz. Scuba Feb 2014 #3
You can see where the velvet is wearing off mnhtnbb Feb 2014 #4
I only see three deer. Curmudgeoness Feb 2014 #5

Rubbing off the velvet is an annual exercise for antlered bucks (and the occasional antlered doe).

but I did see these two bucks fighting each other last week.
They were really locking horns!

Glad to know this is normal and that he's not hurt. I would think if that was raw
it could get infected pretty easily.

Or maybe it is just a tree or a rock or something. But it is fun trying.
