(36,827 posts)1. Instead of ND filters, I use two linear polarization filters
You can turn one of them and adjust exactly how much light you want to go through, all the way to complete darkness. On modern cameras, you have to use them in Live View mode (if your camera has that) in order to retain metering and autofocus. Using them this way they work better than circular polarization filters and they are less expensive.

I will move up to the newer kit lens that doesn't have that annoying rotating front element.

If they don't suck I will post a few. I used the filter to see how it affects high contrast situations.
I used a "6" filter. I will ge a "3" soon.
