Related: About this forumI walked around in Freiburg for an hour or so.
I was there because I drove a friend to see a specialist at the university clinic. While I waited for her to see the doctor, I wandered around in town.
A lot of Freiburg was destroyed during the war, but the Münster escaped relatively unscathed.

There's an aerial photo of Freiburg displayed in the church, showing the damage. It took me a few seconds to twig to what I was looking at.

Saw this kid absorbed in playing with his boat. Can you say "toy boat" over and over without getting your tongue twisted?

The doorway of a 15th century house.

(22,380 posts)bring something to us I can barely wrap my brain around - in the Freiburg Münster (I think that's what it's called) - now and miraculously standing after the WWII air attacks.
The kid and his boat, serene and priceless.
The sculpture, which I would take a photo of for itself alone, is so much more vibrant with the people in it.
And what about the knife in the cobble stones in front of the ancient doorway?
Keep them coming. You amuse and educate me.

(7,398 posts)The knife in the cobble stones may indicate some craft or trade going on inside. My guess is that it was put there relatively recently, but may in fact have replaced an older depiction.
Incredible that the Freiburger Münster survived such devastation. Makes me sad though...war sucks.
Glad you liked the pics! I'm in Paris now-just got here today. Will be here for two weeks-with quite a few days off for wandering around and taking pictures.
Will keep you posted!

(36,827 posts)Quite often they will have before and after pictures which are interesting. Every one I have seen did the repairs so well you can't tell they were ever damaged.

I remember being especially charmed by the water running in the special gutter in the street. I believe they were originally the sewer system, while now people play in them, like that adorable boy with his boat, or they use the water for their plants, and so on...
These are wonderful pictures!
Thanks so much for sharing them.

Freiburg is a very pleasant little town, sort of cozily snuggled up against the hills. I've only been there briefly a couple of times, so I don't know it very well.
Greetings from Paris!
