Fiery Flyby
Photograph by Baldur Sveinsson, National Geographic Your Shot
Every Icelander has watched this from the day that the earthquakes under the Bárðarbunga volcano on the Vatnajökull glacier started, writes Your Shot member Baldur Sveinsson, a retired teacher whos been photographing aircraft for the past 40 years, the most exciting part of which, he says, is photographing from another aircraft. A pilot friend of mine wanted to have a look at the eruption, which is about an hour from Reykjavík. We werent able to find any other aircraft to accompany us but decided to go anyway, as there are almost always some in the vicinity for sightseeing. We found one doing its passes from north to south. Its at least 300 meters [984 feet] in front of the lava spout.

(38,958 posts)looks like the Cessna I took lessons in something like a lifetime ago before running out of money twice and giving up. We only had a flood to fly over then and no volcanos.
Great Photo! Thanks for posting!

(17,005 posts)I'll always remember my first flight on a sea plane in Laconia, New Hampshire. I was just a teen and use to being on a boat.
Going fishing with my father, so it help me overcome my fear of flying taking off into the air with the feeling of a boat ride. It was so beautiful in the air, looking at the water of the lake and the surrounding mountains, such a natural high, great feeling!
Glad I got brave enough to do it.
Second time flying was in my early twenties flying out of Florida with Eastern Airlines to Massachusetts, quite the difference.
Maybe one day you'll be able to do it again.
