Here's a pretty comprehensive review of Apple's new Photos program

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/photos-for-the-mac-is-clean-fast-connected-and-110170322774.html

Apple has never been afraid to kill off its own children. When the company thinks that some technology that it is selling has been surpassed by something better — even the one it used to love — so long.

That’s about to happen again. In a couple of months, Apple will abandon iPhoto and replace it with a completely new program for OS X Yosemite called Photos for the Mac. Apple has also stopped work on Aperture, its professional photo app, although Apple says that Photos isn’t meant to be its replacement. Over at Adobe, the Adobe Lightroom team is turning up the music and spraying beer.

Much more at link.

I've never liked iPhoto NV Whino Feb 2015 #3
I can't wait to try it. iPhoto already does a decent job on converting RAW files. alfredo Feb 2015 #2

I don't like iphoto - but switched to it from Picasa with great reluctance because I wanted the apple products to talk to each other. I look forward to the improvements, and did not know they were in the works.

When he starts going on about iCloud, my head fogged over. Is having all your photos available at all times all that important? I guess I'm a power user and really can't see myself ever editing a photo on anything other than a computer, with Lightroom and when necessary, Photoshop. A lot of that stuff just sounds so gimmicky and sadly even error-prone.

Plus I basically turned iCloud off because it seems some stuff was getting stored there automatically without ever asking me if that's what I wanted.

Maybe I'm becoming a Luddite in my old age.

It never seems to save the things I want saved, and save things I don't care about.

In the mean time, I just bought a 1 terabyte drive for my photos because I filled up my existing photo drive.
