big bend national park

one of the least visited national parks since its in the middle of nowhere

its 70 miles from any real town. the park has an elevation distance of 5500+ feet from the rio grande to the top of emory peak. I stayed in chisos basin which is about 5500 feet above sea level. the temps there were high 80's daytime/mid 60's at night. down on teh rio grande the temps were 110 daytime and 80 at night.

casa grande peak. the lodge i stayed in was at the base of casa grande in chisos basin

the mule ears, an aptly named mountain

santa elena canyon at sunrise. a canyon cut by the rio grande. the walls are 1500 feat high. the right side is the us the left is mexico

the Chihuahua desert looking toward the chisos mountains

one of the native birds hanging out in a tree. i didnt see wily coyote around though

not far from big is the terlingua ghost town with its cemetery. theres a few people that live around there full time in a very harsh ecosystem. it used to be a major mercury mining area but the mines closed a long time ago

It's north of the park. It basically a lone mountain that shoots straight up from the surroundings.

Wonderful shots-makes we want to go! I'll be in Texas in November-might just have to make the trip.

Big bend is a long way from anywhere.

its a 6 1/2 hour drive from austin
7 1/2 from dallas,
8+ from houston
even el paso is a 4 1/2 hour drive.

alpine or presidio which are the nearest real towns although both are less than 7500 people are 70 miles from the park

Yes, I knew it was far, but didn't realize it was 8 hours away from there. Still worth the trip, I reckon.

its a straight shot down i-10 to ft stockton then a left on 385

the speed limit on i-10 is 80 but its a vast wasteland
its really unbelievable how empty west texas is

brewster county where big bend is located is larger than Connecticut but has less than 10k people in it
