near Nairobi, Kenya.
I learned the term when I and a couple of friends went with a group of birders to the Carizo Plains to catch the Sandhill cranes coming in to feed.
We, in my VW van, followed a long line of cars along a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. Every so often the line would screech to a halt, people would pile out and slap binoculars to their eyes, as did we. All we saw were little brown birds.
We were rewarded with the cranes at dusk, though. Quite a sight!

(31,392 posts)I've never gotten a photo of a crane, but my favorite heron photo
I've shot was when I went out to walk from our hotel in Copenhagen to see
The Little Mermaid statue in the harbor. Across the street from our hotel was this park

And on that little bank--about center in the photo under the building-- was this guy

(86,646 posts)Birds are so amazing. I am blessed to have lots of big birds around here, some are hard to get a good picture because they are so "flighty".
Got this one though, I have lots of pics of this guy...

(86,646 posts)and I agree, such graceful lines. We have Trumpeter swans here, which what this guy is, he was a young adult waiting for a mate to come along. He was hanging out along a two mile stretch of river for months. One day I was watching and taking pictures of him and he had a duck-buddy, they hung around and dipped and dove together for quite some time. I like to watch animal behavior, I find it as interesting as the appearance of the animals.
