Alone

As a lot of you may be aware, Alaska has one of the highest suicide and depression rates of any state in the nation. Artist Sarah Davies' 100 Stone project commemorates 100 of these stories. You can read about her project here: http://www.100stoneproject.com/

This is one of the sculptures that I particularly liked looking out across Cook Inlet.

Taking pictures of other artist's work usually feels like cheating to me but the light, time of day and totality of the image raises the original work to a level that I'm sure Ms Davis would appreciate.

Ya done good hon.

Originally when they set them up, they didn't account for a very high tide and rough seas, which knocked over many of the statues that were down closer to the beach. I took this shot right after that happened and just before we went to Oregon, and this was one of the few that was still standing since it was up on the bluff. Seeing all the statues tossed about and laying on their sides near the shoreline like that was kind of eerie, and if anything made the point about how these lives were buffeted by life's hardships. But from what I understand, with the help of a couple of local unions, they were able to get them all back up and in place by the opening on December 5. I haven't been back down on the beach since we've been back, so I don't know how they're doing now, but the plan was to leave them installed and let nature take its course.

What a great project.

I'm glad you brought this to our attention, my dear Blue...
