When I walked into the alley, an off duty waiter said there wasn't anything to shoot back there.

I'm glad you are corroborating what I said about the little happy dance knowing this was going to be an awesome twist of fate should the photo turn out.

It's that additional bit of interest (the smoker, of course in this case) that to me turns a photo that is beautiful, and perfectly crafted, into an emotional winner as well.
And therefore a masterpiece.

Having that woman enter the frame softened the photo. It went from an exercise, into a street photo.

I could look at this for a long time. Mira said it, it's a masterpiece.

Edit: NV Whino was on to something, I think. We should have a phone/power wires contest (or just post 'em). They aren't always a distraction and can be a significant element, as is evident in this image.

The power lines utility lines type of contest or a weeklong challenge would be a good idea.
