New toys!

Last edited Thu Jul 7, 2016, 06:53 PM - Edit history (1)

Wife retired and we took our first semi long trip. Went to FL and stopped in NOLA on the way back. Suddenly she wants to get into photography so we dig out the Pen EPL1 I bought for her awhile back. Only thing is it doesn't have a short zoom to go with it. Nothing to do but donate the 14-42 from my EM5 and replace it with the 12-50 splash proof semi pro lens. Yeah, I know, big hearted of me right?

The 12-50 is actually designed for use in video mode, it has electronic zoom and a function to suspend auto focus when something passes between the camera and subject but reviews are really good. Some small quibble with resolution and fall off in the corners at 12 mm but overall performance is on par with most 4/3 lenses. It's also BIG, twice the size of the extended 14-42 R which is a big deal with 4/3 mirrorless people. That said all functions are internal so it doesn't change size. It's also kinda slow at 50 mm (f6.3). I can live with all that to get the dust/rain proof and extra range. It also has a macro mode to focus from a few inches to 1.6 ft. Haven't shot anything with it yet but hope to get out soon if the temp lets up a bit.

I also got the 9 mm body cap lens just for fun. Not the sharpest lens in the kit but kinda fun if I use manual focus on something in the foreground. Got some nice stuff in NOLA's narrow alleys that I hope to process when she gives me my 'puter back.

Stay tuned!
