I recently bought a loupe/sensor cleaning kit. To familiarize myself with the loupe, I'd like to experiment with an old EOS 5D which hasn't worked in years and would be therefore impossible to harm. The hitch is that I don't have a battery for it anymore...it's easy enough to flip the mirror up, but I don't know if it's possible to open the shutter without power. "The Google" wasn't any help...any ideas?

(16,190 posts)power it from a remote source? The last Canon I had was an AE-1. I'm looking at my wife's T3i and I don't really see one. My Olympus E-30 has one called DC 9V. I have the same on most of my other Olympus (DSLR) models, so if you can pick one up it can probably be used across your range so you wouldn't have to buy a unique battery that you'll never use otherwise. I use my DC 9V port for time lapse in cold weather.

(2,029 posts)There is a connection next to the release port. I'll check that a little later.

(2,029 posts)I don't know if I have anything that can connect to it, but it will be worth a try.

(16,190 posts)photos online and the jack looks pretty standard, and apparently it's 12V... I'm wondering if a simple universal DC power supply, with the interchangeable jacks/polarity/voltage would work. Since your 5D doesn't get used anyway it might be worth checking. If it works, you have a low cost solution for your other cameras, if it doesn't, you haven't risked a working camera.

Wasabi batteries are good and cheap

(2,029 posts)It's been little more than a paperweight since I made the mistake of buying it on eBay. As a test subject it might actually have some utility, though.

(2,029 posts)For the mirror, I just flipped it up with my finger and taped it in place.
