to keep the deer out from feeding on a young Japanese maple) but they often come and knock seed out of the bird feeders and then gobble it up from the ground.

They did scatter, though, when I went up the front steps to get that line out of my shot. (The lines have worked because the deer walk around them.)
It's very strange. Snowy and I will come up on deer when we're out walking in the morning and they just stand and stare at us. Not 15-20 feet away.
Even though I was farther away from them in the yard, they spooked.

(118,870 posts)were all brown. When I looked for the picture in the camera later, there were only leaves in the forest. The deer did not register at all. I thought that was pretty spooky. Course they were not as close as your deer were to you. Pretty animals.
