Some street photography

Although I don't adhere to any particular school or aesthetic, I consider all my work to be "street photography" for the simple reason that it's all done while walking here or there. That applies to the flower photos I posted in my intro as well as more typical "street shots" like these.

Love all these. Do you ask permission if you're right there on them? CurtEastPoint Jun 2017 #1

I'm always so hesitant. I shoot mostly in Europe and they're big on privacy but if I ask permission most people smile and say yes.

Unlike some other street photogs I don't have a routine practice.

I usually make eye contact and trade smiles before I shoot, but not always. If I'm going to spend a bit of time working a scene, as I did with Pigeon Man, I'll usually chat and ask permission first - but again, not always. If I haven't spoken to a subject first, I try to stay alert to body language cues that tell me they're uncomfortable with what I'm doing. If I sense that I'll usually stop, but I also generally manage to grab a frame or two first.

One time I almost always ask for permission is if the subject is a child. I am circumspect around kids, because I had a run-in with a very suspicious parent in a playground a couple of decades ago. It left a mark. that being said, I didn't ask permission for the two photos of kids in this batch.

It all depends.

If I can snap it incognito, great. I know there are some baddies out there so I do ask if parents are there. I tried in Germany once w/a table of kids w/their nannies...they were all so cute and one nanny said she didn't think it was a good idea. I told her I understood.
