My wife found them when she was out walking our big dog. Someone had dumped them. The vet said they were about 6 weeks old at the time, just old enough to get their shots.
Ever since we got them they have done this weird thing: They will sit down next to each other, assume practically the same position, and hold it for about 5 minutes like they've gone into a trance or something. They aren't looking at anything (as far as I can tell). They can even be in different parts of the house; one will go find the other, and they will exhibit this behavior. At the end of about 5 minutes they will turn their heads, look at each other, and then go about whatever it was they were doing prior to the behavior (sitting on my lap in this case). It can be kind of unnerving. I've started wondering if they are downloading instructions from a mother ship somewhere... .
Seriously, anyone know anything about this type of behavior in dogs? I will post in the Pets Group as well.
mnhtnbb earlier posted an image that included her feet; figured I could as well, although mine isn't as nice.

(19,459 posts)I can call their names when they are in the middle of it and they will break the "trance." I usually have to repeat myself 3 or 4 times. They will finally turn their heads, look at each other, look at me, and then get up and go about their business.

My terrier mix will bark at nothing. The wind, particles floating about in the wind, or may even quarks. I don't know. He knows something is there even if I can't see it.
So if your babies are get a message from the mother-ship, it's probably not to take over the planet. Or it is.
You never know.
But it might be fun. I'm sure I'd enjoy playing fetch.

(19,459 posts)We suspect they are some kind of scouting party.

It appears that she walked in while they were watching Downton Abbey.

Dogs are the best.

(19,459 posts)They are interesting dogs. When they were puppies they would occasionally go into a kind of hand stand while eating. Not synchronized, as in this case. They have not exhibited that behavior since they were pups.

Hope you get some answers!

(19,459 posts)I suppose it is possible that one is picking up on the distress from the other one; there are no visible signs of distress that we have been able to observe, but dogs have a very acute ability to pick up on things humans don't/can't normally observe.
We intended to adopt them out but they wheedled their way into our hearts, little miscreants that they are.

(15,682 posts)I'm afraid I would find it totally unnerving especially if I were alone with them. But I would be equally fascinated and would want to find out what the heck they were doing.
Sounds like some evil (human) twins kind of thing like you would see in a creepy movie.

(36,827 posts)It might be something like they want out or want food or want to play. One may have either been trained to do this or figured it out on their own and the other learned from the behavior.

(11,797 posts)Dogs are wonderful. But they are weird creatures too. Who would want to put up with humans?

(15,958 posts)Which is far better than receiving instructions from a mother ship. They are directly in tune to Sirius!
