First of all great shot.

I downloaded an app a while back that quite frankly keep forgetting to try, iLightningCam, it shoots when it senses a strike.

As far as the banding goes, it looks like a bit of a jpg compression glitch that sometimes happens with gradients.

I have been using my iPhone camera more and more. It has resolution higher than a lot of digital cameras out there.
