We just returned from two weeks in heaven there...our last full day we really got lucky when kayaking in an estuary near Springer Point - you can see the treeful of mixed herons and Ibis, which scattered a bit when we got close - but plenty stuck around for some lucky shots - used a Canon SX 30IS with a 35X zoom, while kayaking (thankfully on a calm day!)....

(47,675 posts)Unfortunately, their biggest threat is cormorants. It's bad enough that the city sent in pro snipers to cull the cormorants. They had to dress in rain gear because cormorants have a curious defense technique of barfing half-digested fish all over you. I see both kinds of birds on a regular basis and once saw several hundred egrets flocking at several different altitudes. It was amazing.

(2,951 posts)I would love to visit the area one day. We have a retirement home next to my husbands parents in Harnett County, NC, but have not been to the Outer Banks area yet. The last three trips I have made there I have spent my time in the State Archives in Raleigh doing genealogy work. I need to take time for fun.

So beautiful!

(5,816 posts)Ocracoke is one of my favorite places. I love Springer's Point - I'm not at all religious, but it's a very spiritual place to me.
Love all of your photos, especially the ones of the Ibis. They always make me smile.
