love to see her with Willie Nelson. Two icons with braids....and two of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time...

She was magnificent. If Joni hadn't earned this honor, then nobody else ever did. And, to see Brandi Carlisle smiling throughout Joni's performance was the best thing on TV in I don't know when.

I love Joni Mitchell. But I wanted Nickel Creek's Celebrants to win in her category.

I was moved by the piano playing. Then spotted Jacob Collier. He's amazing. And Brandi Carlyle seated beside her. She held court .

People would be hard pressed to find someone who admires Joni more than me. She was like the big sister that I never had. We looked similar. I played instruments and wrote. I am a painter. I am a skating scorpio with similar attitude.
I admire her for her lyrics and her chording inventions. BUT...having said that...Nickle Creek's last CD was otherworldly. A masterpiece. I felt they were in the wrong category also. Or maybe Joni was?
I was afraid they would throw the award to her. Which they did. I am disappointed and all this coming from someone who holds her in the highest esteem. And as hard as it is for me to say it, NC should have gotten the Grammy or A Grammy.

It was a sentimental choice. I wonder about the category too. There are numerous questionable decisions. Folk, Americana, American Roots. Bluegrass. Celebrants touches all of this.

but frequently comes perhaps closest to Newgrass.

I am disappointed because something like Celebrants will not come around again. It was kismet. Wished they would have judged to quality instead of sentimentality like you best described it. This is the only time I have not felt good about Joni. But it is not her fault.

I pretty much knew NC would get kicked to the curb with the way categories were chosen and filled. They should just have honored her IMHO.

Did you catch them on tour? We did in October at the Ace Hotel. I'm trying to focus on their music and not the politics of the Grammys. My advice: Keep listening.

From the concert we attended:
