Sparked by bananas' DU post on VICE's impressive Fukushima report, I watched parts of a pair of episodes on HBO GO (segments: Camden, 'scrappers,' and drones). As you expressed... More: http://connect.hbo.com/vice/
Only Philly.com appears to have covered the story - not nj.com, NYT, or other NY metropolitan region/national rags or tv/radio outlets.
VICE, per se, is huge (and international), apparently, and I'm reserving judgement on all that. US homepage: http://www.vice.com

Last December, Rolling Stones Matt Taibbi penned Apocalypse, New Jersey, detailing Camdens fall into crime and poverty and how police are surveilling the problem. Since then, its been denounced as poverty porn and held up as a fiery screed on our police sectors growing ills. Now, Vice is getting in on the action.
The crew for Vices popular half-hour HBO news show made their way to Camden in February on the heels of Taibbis article to get a closer look at the story. Their take will air next week for the Shows finale, a typical dual-topic episode that will fit Camdens crime and surveillance problem next to the forgotten genocide in Darfur.
As the story goes, Camden police are essentially turning the city into a surveillance state in order to keep up with the high crime rate theyre faced with on a daily basis. The result, it seems, has been the removal of privacy from Camdens residents in the name of better policing through technology.
Judging from the trailer, it seems to be that way. See for yourself below (Season 2 Episode 12 Preview): http://www.hbo.com/video/video.html?autoplay=true&vid=1380744#/

(20,805 posts)...especially the little fiefdom that has been created out of Camden...which according to the chief of po-po's isn't a massive violation of everyone's rights and a blatant snubbing of the Constitution all wrapped up in a police-state mentality, but rather a series of actions welcomed by the community to curb the crime. The ultimate irony was left til the very end when they asked the head cop what his definition of a police state was, and he described, to a tee, what they had done in Camden.
Fair warning though, if you are on Facebook I woulds suggest NOT following the VICE feed as it is choc-a-bloc full of puerile click-bait crap...go with the VICE NEWS feed instead...
