About "Outlander"
The "Outlander" series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure in one epic tale. The series, adapted from Diana Gabaldon's international best-selling books by Ronald D. Moore ("Battlestar Galactica," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Star Trek: The Next Generation" , follows the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945, who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743. Upon her arrival, she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. But when she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate relationship is ignited. Now, Claire's heart is torn between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
"Outlander" is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television.

There is a significant critical audience for this show. We'll see if it delivers like the books do.

(34,111 posts)too much to do and other good shows I record and fill my DVR with until I have time. The good thing is you can now actually see these things later . I will be anxious to hear about it. It sounds good.
Silver Gaia
(4,544 posts)Ron Moore (of BSG fame) is involved, and so is Diana Gabaldon (writer of the books)--they are co-writing--so I think it will be good.

(61,695 posts)But I don't subscribe to Starz. I might have to change that if I can add it to my DirecTv cheaply enough.
I missed the first episode, of course.

The I started watching the White Queen and got hooked.

(4,544 posts)I liked it a LOT. The hubby and I both did. Well-written, well-acted. BEAUTIFUL scenery (on location in Scotland). Obviously high production values. I can't think of anything I didn't like, and a lot I did like very much.

(88,117 posts)Good acting, lovely scenery. I have never read the series, but I was reading a book forum today with an interesting thing. Can't find it again, or I would quote it....but it was to the effect that the book had always been listed under the Romance section. Now book sites are listing it more generally and it has been selling a lot more. I really was unaware of it. I ordered it this week after viewing the opener. It seems historical to me with a rich background in Scotland...good dialogue.
The author lives in the US, but she certainly has a depth of knowledge of Scottish history.

(258 posts)I found some of the dialogue (esp. the parts spoken by the Scots men, were very difficult to hear and understand). We had to crank the volume way up to get some of it. That being said, I'm enjoying it a lot since I've read the books (my husband hasn't and he keeps saying, "who's that, and what's that all about"? to almost everything that happens). I want to tell him to just read the books and he'll understand it.

(88,117 posts)I think I would be having a harder time if I weren't reading it.
Beautiful scenery.

(42,334 posts)I love the books and thought E1 was very good.
I may have to subscribe to Starz.
FYI: the 8 books span 30+ years. If they do a book a year, they'll have to age up those actors!

(88,117 posts)I am an avid reader, though mostly a mystery genre. I am one of apparently very few who never heard of this book until the TV show. Seems like an interesting read with good dialogue and rich background.
What a huge book!

(7,699 posts)Especially how it depicts life in the clan days in Scotland.
There were several recent episodes however where neither my husband or myself could understand the dialogue delivered with incredibly heavy accents, no matter how many times we replayed it.
Silver Gaia
(4,544 posts)I read that they wanted the audience to experience it through Claire's eyes (or ears), so that's why they are not using subtitles for the Gaelic dialogue, but some of the dialogue spoken in English is hard to understand, too. I don't mind it too much, though. At least it's authentic!
Cleita
(75,480 posts)one time, who would speak really broad Scots around me, so I had to learn the dialect in self-defense. Write to Ron Moore or Starz and request subtitles. Maybe since they were filming in Scotland the crews got used to the speech and didn't think about the fact that most Americans don't understand it.
Also a common phrase is d'ya ken, which means do you know or you know, which they used liberally among the Scottish characters. Maybe this will help in understanding many of the conversations.

(75,480 posts)The period is pivotal in Scottish/English history. The romantic lead is a Jacobite and the events of the books are just prior to the battle of Culloden that was the beginning of the destruction of the clan culture that is depicted in the series.
Oh it doesn't hurt that the male lead Sam Heughan is drop dead gorgeous.
I agree with ALL of that.

I bought the books on audio so I could listen to them in my travels to work each day (1 hour each way)

(75,480 posts)Looks like Frank Randall has inherited some of the sadism genes from his ancestor Black Jack Randall. Scary.

(103,856 posts)I'm DVR-ing it.. I rewatched the final episode just to refresh my memory,
I did not read the books, so I don't know how the story progresses, but I have wondered what would happen to a child she might have "back in the day".. If she went back to the 1940's, would the child be left behind?

(7,429 posts)I love this show
Silver Gaia
(4,544 posts)historically, it had its reason for being, and it helped establish Jamie's uncertainty about how to be a good husband to Claire. Otherwise, I loved it. And as one feminist reviewer said, Jamie is hot, so you have to forgive him, just as Claire did. LOL
