World War l drama, 5 hours, originally done on BBC, concerning a group of Brit upper class types, in the trenches and in their estates. Great pedigree: screenplay by Sir Tom Stoppard, based on Ford Madox Ford's novel. Good cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch in a leading role. I caught the last 2 hours on HBO this morning, very worthwhile.

(6,253 posts)I thought it was excellent, but not for everyone.
It was understated, moving, subtle. Despite the WWI setting, there was little in the way of slam-bang action. But I found myself wrapped up in the lives of these people, not just the three leads, but the minor roles as well.
I ended up buying the book (actually four novels published in one volume). I don't know if I would have enjoyed the book as well if I had not already seen the series. The book is apparently one of the first "modernist" novels, and it follows the stream of consciousness of the main character, Christopher Tietjens, and tends to skip around in time.
