Arizona State has first win over #2 team in double-overtime upset over Arizona

Fighting through a defensively dominated game, Arizona State pulled out arguably the biggest home win in school history, knocking off No. 2 Arizona 69-66 in double overtime Friday night.

Marshall scored eight of his 29 points in the second overtime, and Bachynski swatted T.J. McConnell's drive with 6 seconds left, leading to a raucous midcourt celebration that had to restart because more time was left on the clock.

Arizona State (19-6, 8-4 Pac-12) won it by turning to Marshall and relying on Bachynski.

"In terms of college basketball, that's as good as it gets," said Arizona State coach Herb Sendek, who was doused with Gatorade in the locker room. "Obviously, the game could have gone either way, but I stand in awe at the players on both teams and their ability to perform on a stage like that, in such conditions; they really have my total respect."

ASU men's basketball upsets No. 2 Arizona in double overtime

<snip>

It was ASU’s biggest win of the season, the biggest win of Herb Sendek’s eight years, the biggest in the 40-year history of Wells Fargo Arena, surpassing the Sun Devils’ win over fourth-ranked Oregon State in 1982.

ASU improved to 19-6 and 8-4 in the Pac-12, getting the signature win that, barring a collapse, should cement its chances of capturing its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2009. As a result, the students rushed the court, a celebration for a program in need of some.

Although the action wasn’t always pretty, this was great college basketball, a night when the desert schools had the stage to themselves, playing a rare Friday night contest on national television. The game featured 16 lead changes and nine ties. No team ever led by more than six points.

UA dropped to 23-2 and 10-2, a minor setback to its chances of securing a No.1 seed. The Wildcats, playing its first 40 minutes on the road without starting forward Brandon Ashley, led 63-59 in the second overtime but couldn’t hang on. Marshall was the reason.

One of the greatest games I've watched. It seemed like Arizona State was playing better but Arizona somehow kept getting back in it and when they got that 4-point lead late in the second period I was doubtful when it came to ASU chances.
