http://www.fox10phoenix.com/story/27511379/2014/11/30/protestors-flood-streets-of-old-town-scottsdale-following-ferguson-grand-jury-decisionThis took place about 2 miles from my home. The area is an art district as well as small upscale bars, bistros etc... There are many southwest statues depicting Native Americans, Cowboys and most of all horses. They defaced the base of a beautiful statue. Clink on the picture to get a better view of the statue.
Edited to add:
This is the same area that Occupy Scottsdale used when they were here for their visit. I'd like to know why they picked this area. My guess is that Scottsdale's nickname is Snobsdale. Too bad they did not realize that south Scottsdale is not the rich man side. Chevrolets, Fords and other moderate priced vehicles are the norm. They took their anger out on the wrong people.

not dressing right or driving a beater in the northern part of town is considered vandalism (unless you are the help)
snark, aside - yeah looked like chalk to me, night clean up crews probably had it cleaned up by morning.

(6,204 posts)yes, it is chalk on the sidewalk but all of the stores around there are southwestern art. But I guess artists don't matter here at DU. Kali, the last remark is not directed toward you but just at the folks who don't understand the area.

(17,997 posts)I said I wasn't excusing damaging the piece of art. But chalk on the ground and base of statues didn't justify that clip.

(55,007 posts)(McKellips and Scottsdale Rd neighborhood) so I have a pretty good recollection of the area (actually I was up at that Trader Joe's near Osborne just last week)
I don't condone property damage in general, and the broken window and damage to a piece of art was definitely wrong, but calling chalk markings vandalism is a stretch. The attitude in much of that area is pretty upper class snob, you can't deny that.
And to draw from a couple comments about chalk not really being too serious, that artists don't matter on DU? I am not sure what to say to that, as it is such a leap of logic.

(6,204 posts)if you watch the news clip a $6,000 dollar piece of sculpture was also damaged. The area where that statue is mainly southwestern art stores. The ones who did the damage were not residents of the city.
"Cops kill people so kill cops," even though written in chalk is hateful, imho.
marym625
(17,997 posts)Not excusing that. And yes, it's hateful. It's also words in chalk. The anger is deep. It's real and it's justifiable. If something doesn't change soon with these killer cops and them getting off, I'm afraid it will be more than words.

(6,204 posts)coverage. It was a peaceful protest except for the rock throwing incident.
