Charitable Tax Credits

Based on my understanding, you can give a donation to a charitable organization and basically replace income tax paid to the state up to $200, while claiming a standard deduction on federal taxes. Have I got this right?

I haven't donated to a lot of local/state organizations so from this list, does anyone have any recommendations for great charities that do good work, preferably with a progressive bent?

not saying anything wrong with any others, just that I am familiar with these and would feel comfortable recommending them.
