Dock the USS Arizona in Tucson? With this plan, it's possible

TUCSON — Ed Westcott was 15 years old, a high school kid in Peru, Ind., when Japanese bombers attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. His life as he knew it ended in the aftermath.

His brother, William Westcott, died aboard the USS Arizona. In early 1942, by then all of 16, Ed Westcott enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His first assignment took him to the South Pacific. He spent much of the war on mortuary duty, tending to the bodies of fallen Americans.

<snip>

Westcott wants to dock the mighty battleship, symbolically, on the central mall of the University of Arizona.

A six-inch wide concrete rail would outline the shape of the Arizona on the UA’s grassy mall east of Old Main. Embedded in the rail at intervals would be 1,177 brass medallions, each inscribed with the name of an Arizona crewman killed in the attack.
