An Obama-era decision prohibits new mining claims on roughly 1,562 square miles outside the boundaries of the national park through 2032. But that doesnt keep uranium companies with grandfathered claims from developing them.
The U.S. Forest Service concluded in 2012 that Energy Fuels Inc. has a valid, existing right to mine near Tusayan, the gateway town to the Grand Canyons South Rim entrance. The company is waiting for uranium prices to rebound before reopening the Canyon Mine.
Environmental groups and the Havasupai Tribe challenged the Forest Services determination in a lawsuit against the agency and Energy Fuels.

(8,203 posts)to Vegas, headed towards Colo friends home..It was late - looking for lodging..we happened onto a hunters lodge outside of the North Rim..don't ask me how we got there..mid-July..
I remember a great menu..oh dear,no tv or radio, a big gap under the door to the room..I remember stone walls..the next day we drove to the North Rim..I have pictures of my husband standing on a very high rock formation with the Grand Canyon all around..
We are from Massachusetts and were on this cross country trip for a month..I will say, that trip, for someone who had never been beyond NYC, I was in awe...
We retired to AZ 24 year ago, have visited the South rim many times..yes, have winter scene pics - I just might suggest we go back to the North Rim....
So glad this fight will continue to preserve a most beautiful part of this country..Toro Weep Rd. I will put this in my journal....
