Arizona lawmaker draws teardrops on her face to protest abortion bill

Rep. Kelly Townsend, R-Mesa, on Wednesday posted a photo of herself with two teardrops drawn under her eye, an accent she said was in response to a bill that would have repealed an Arizona abortion law.

A filled-in teardrop tattoo on the face often signifies that the wearer has committed murder, according to Kentucky Law Enforcement Magazine, although the tattoo has recently become popular among some musicians such as Lil Wayne. The tattoo can also carry other meanings, such as time spent in prison.

"I can't control what people think or where their minds have taken it, it has nothing to do with gangs, prison or any of that," Townsend said. "I just want to focus on the life of babies that are left to die."

The photo Townsend posted on Facebook, accompanied with the caption "Today's face, in response to HB2696 that would repeal the born alive act," was posted just before the House Judiciary committee meeting to discuss the bill.

Townsend has previously received some viral attention for asking on social media for an explanation of "furries" and gaining her own "fursona."
