Great Thai Food in Tucson

On our first trip to Tucson I was surprised to find it such a funky town.

We knew that they had a Thai Buddhist Temple but found that they had a couple.

The one that was the most accessible, and the first one that we went to was Wat Buddhametta-Tucson

Wat Buddhametta is quite unusual because it is a full functioning Thai Buddhist Temple but is supported mostly by non-Thai native born Americans. Everything is in English and they make accommodations to suit the local population and emphasize meditation and Dharma instruction.

Their main fund raiser is a monthly Thai dinner where they have a huge buffet for $ 10 requested donation (it is the only time that they ask for donations, everything else at the temple is free, and if somebody is unable to pay you can tell the abbot and they will waive the donation).

Next dinner is Sept 15 we are going to try and be there, if anybody is also going send me a pm so we can try and meet there.

Though I haven't been able to afford dining out for quite some time, Bangkok Cafe
at Speedway & Tucson was by far my favorite Thai place. Definitely try their appetizer
spring rolls and I'm partial to their beef larb.

Do NOT go above 3 on their heat scale. I love heat and asked for 4 once -- every
orifice was "crying" and I was so self-conscious of my undoubtedly beet-red face
that I left money on the table and bolted.

I took a date there once and was teasing her far in advance about how the place
had nothing but CUTE little Thai waitresses as servers.
.
Wouldn't you know it -- when we got there, we got their new server -- a BIG and
devastatingly handsome Thai man.

Instant karma gonna get me.

BTW, the Buddhist food stand at the Meet Yourself Festival is my favorite -- both
their chicken satay AND their fried bananas are the best I've ever tasted.

Seem to specialize in fried bananas, but he went back for 3 years. You should try the monthly buffet. It may be catered by BC.

A menu that's a little more extensive than most Mexican restaurants (I always start off
with their creamy spinach/mushroom tortilla dip and ALMOST always order the "Three
Bandidos" -- 3 enchiladas: a chicken w/mole sauce, a beef with red chile sauce and a
cheese with a chile verde sauce.

Evenings, they have a 3-4 pc wandering mariachi band and (my favorite part) several
middle-aged Mexican women in traditional peasant dresses who roll a cart to your table
and make your salsa to order right there. YUM!!!

And it's pretty reasonably-priced for all this presentation glory.
