GOP Controls Arkansas Senate, House Control Unclear

http://5newsonline.com/2012/11/07/gop-controls-arkansas-senate-house-control-unclear/

Republicans firmly won the Arkansas State Senate for the first time since Reconstruction, but control of the Arkansas House is still an undecided matter.

With expectations for huge gains in both chambers of the General Assembly, the GOP delivered in the Senate picking up 21 seats to the Democrats 13. One seat in southeast Arkansas saw a Democrat leading, but two ballot boxes remaining to be counted. Needing only 18 seats to win, Republicans will control the capitol’s upper chamber with a clear majority.

snip

With designs on picking up 60 or more seats, Republicans sprinted to early leads only to see Democrats make up ground as final races were decided. In the end, the Republicans firmly held 50 seats to the Democrats 48. One Green Party candidate, a former Democrat, ran unopposed in an east Arkansas House race.

House District 52, which pitted Republican John Hutchison against Democrat L.J. Bryant, ended late Tuesday night with Hutchison holding a 45-vote lead. However, 200 provisional ballots remained to be counted, which could sway the outcome of the election and the balance of the House.

This is damn depressing.

I see the end of Medicaid expansion, expansion of fracking, deep cuts to all things social and taxes for the Waltons, Hunts, Tysons, et al. The Democratic Party in Arkansas is moribund and dying out. It looks like a long cold winter.

But his final term runs out in a couple of years and I worry that we'll get stuck with another Huckabee after him. Then things would REALLY be screwed.

Are you a central committee member? The state party is meeting on the 8th and I think we need to represent our counties and start moving even without them. I have a treasure trove of campaign how to materials and we need to start fielding and training our candidates now so they can move into place in 2014 with real knowledge and base. We of course need to have GOTV now, not in mid 2014. People want to be involved now because the election is fresh.

What's your district number? We are the newly drawn 97th and we just got a teabagger because our candidate didn't know how to campaign (and of course, didn't want to hear it from a woman he didn't know...until I worked one event for him and he was a bit blown away and then wanted me to work for him - the last 2 weeks of the campaign)

I was an Arkansas Boys' State delegate (got to sit in Governor Pryor's chair on the last day ), met Senator Bumpers at a Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Little Flock (and wrote several letters to him while he was Senator), met David Pryor as Senator when he gave an informal talk in Springdale, received a diploma from Governor Clinton, and met Clinton again when he came to Springdale for his first visit back to Arkansas after becoming President. I had been aiming for something politically-related in the state, but then fate took me out of the state and I've lost whatever political connections I had developed there. I'm still a registered voter there (district 92), so I'm a neighbor of yours in that respect.
