UPDATE: Man with gun who prompted ASU lockdown now in custody

By Max Brantley

UPDATE: After roughly 90 minutes of tension, KAIT-TV in Jonesboro reported shortly before 3 p.m. that an armed man that put the Arkansas State University campus in lockdown had been taken into custody. There have no reports of shots fired. A bomb squad will check the man's truck, which police surrounded shortly after he drove onto the center of campus and was seen holding what appeared to be a shotgun. The sheriff said no shots were fired and no one was hurt.

This is what we reported earlier:

The official Arkansas State University Twitter account at 1:35 p.m. posted this message:

Report of an active shooter spotted at the student union. Everyone should evacuate to the west side of the building and clear the area.

being uncooperative. My working theory will be that his problems stem from him being an asshole. I could be proven wrong.

And then looked like he was hoping for suicide by cop but the Jonesboro police brought in a negotiator real quickly and brought everything to a peaceful conclusion.

JONESBORO, Ark. (KTHV) – An active shooter alert was in effect at Arkansas State University Thursday, according to campus police. The alleged gunman is now in custody.

Here's a look at the information we know now:

- A tweet shared by the university just after 1:30 p.m. read, "Report of an active shooter spotted at the student union. Everyone should evacuate to the west side of the building and clear the area."

- The Associated Press reports an armed man drove onto campus in a pickup truck outside the student union Thursday afternoon.

- Police quickly surrounded him, and by 2:48 p.m., Jonesboro police said the man, Brad Bartelt, 47, was in custody. The Craighead County Sheriff's Office's inmate roster lists Bartelt as being charged with aggravated assault.
