California’s largest nursing home owner under fire from government regulators

http://www.sacbee.com/news/investigations/nursing-homes/article24015475.html

Since 2006, Rechnitz and his primary company, Brius Healthcare Services, have acquired 81 nursing homes up and down the state, many of them through bankruptcy court. His chain has grown so quickly that he now controls about 1 in every 14 nursing home beds in California, giving him an outsized influence on quality of care in the state.

In the past year, multiple alarms have been raised about this relative newcomer to the industry and the care provided in some of his homes. His facilities have become the target of police scrutiny, lawsuits, stiff regulatory fines and state and federal investigations that have uncovered numerous alleged violations.

“What we’re seeing at the Brius locations is quite concerning,” said Molly Davies, administrator of Los Angeles’ long-term care ombudsman program, which investigates nursing home complaints. “We have seen patterns of poor care, patterns of substandard care in some of these facilities.”

Davies said her staff has witnessed a “flagrant disregard for human life” in some Brius-owned facilities.

Google turned up this little gem.

Despite the exclusion of the Haredi parties from his 3rd government and the passing of laws that were aimed at harming the Orthodox Jewish community in Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received a hefty check by a renowned Orthodox Jewish philanthropist in the United States.

According to a list published on the State Comptroller’s website, Shlomo Rechnitz, the founder of TwinMed, LLC and owner of Brius Healthcare Services, maxed out the permitted amount of 45,880 shekels, giving the Likud leader a check of 44,507.00 NIS. Rechnitz is known for his philanthropy and composing of the most popular Hasidic songs.

Netanyahu has so far raised nearly 539,000 shekels ($137,000) – between November 25th and December 15 – in his bid to retain his position at the head of Likud – from 15 donors, all overseas. Fourteen are from the United States, while one is from Spain. Among the U.S. donors to Netanyahu’s campaign is Kenneth Abramowitz, head of American Friends of Likud, who contributed about 40,000 shekels. The donors also included four members of the Miami-based Falic family, each giving the maximum permitted.netanyahu donors

Netanyahu’s only challenger, Danny Danon raised a total of 261,000 shekels from 11 donors – 10 of whom reside in the United States.
