BERKELEYSIDE: Dozens of people stripped naked on the UC Berkeley campus today to protest what they say is an unnecessary and potentially harmful FEMA-funded proposal to clear thousands of trees in the East Bay hills.
The event was orchestrated by the Tree Spirit Project whose mission is to raise awareness of the critical role trees play in our lives, both globally and personally. Jack Gescheidt, who founded the project, does this partly by taking fine-art photographs of people, often naked, communing with trees and nature.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency in March allocated $5.7 million to the California Office of Emergency Services to remove eucalyptus trees as part of fire hazard abatement in Claremont Canyon scene of a devastating wildfire in 1991 and other nearby areas, such as Tilden Park and Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve. The funds will be distributed to UC Berkeley, the city of Oakland, and the East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD).

(4,299 posts)Even tho' I have seen eucalyptus go up like torches. In Southern California, they have long been used as wind-breaks between crops.
I'd get nakid to save an old oak or redwood, but eucalyptus, nah.

(3,732 posts)the tremendous political will and "commitment" in Berkeley could be channeled into making this city a true vanguard of progressive social uplift!
This picture reveals the big lie about Berkeley's progressive reputation. The emperor has no clothes.
Both the wealthy hipsters and the traditional old money collude to fritter away their political energies on fighting Big Soda and savimg venerable trees. I don't want to knock those causes - just point out those same people are quite comfortable with ignoring cases of homeless families all around them.
A local gazillionaire just gave 5 million dollars to UC Berkeley for some auditorium.Another donor gave over a million dollars to restote a theater downtown. I'm all for restoring this theater. But donations like this prove *the money is there* and the superrich just let other people suffer.
Today I joked with someone about how people in the Berkeley Hills would never concede a right to "equality of views". What if someone donated or bequeathed a large plot of land in the Berkeley Hills with water/sewage/electricity access? We could build a Tiny House village for people on fixed incomes, emphasizing their autonomy and independence. The location would encourage regular contact and mixing between people from different status and identity groups. This is something that could happen. It should happen.
But I'll die holding my breath waiting for it to happen.
