Los Angeles considers raising cat limit from 3 to 5

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Los-Angeles-considers-raising-cat-limit-from-3-to-6482477.php

The Los Angeles City Council wants to keep cats out of shelters and in order to do so is considering changing city code to raise the household limit on feline friends from three to five.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1hWbfqP ) the Personnel and Animal Welfare Committee unanimously approved a proposal Wednesday to allow more cats in an attempt to encourage more residents to adopt more pets and help reduce the number of animals being euthanized. It is currently illegal to own more than three cats without a kennel permit.

Critics of the proposal say the higher limit could encourage animal hoarding and nuisance issues.

If the committee's proposal is approved by the council, the city attorney's office would draft an ordinance to raise the cat limit.

L.A. has a cat limit?! Is there a dog limit?

Here's an idea: Ban no-pet clauses in leases, as Berkeley was considering a while ago.

The ordinance says you can have three adult animals: 3 cats, or 3 dogs, or 1 cat and 2 dogs, or 2 cats and 1 dog, whatever. Or 1 dog, 1 cat, and 1 rabbit. Or 1 cat and 2 ferrets. Nobody pays any attention. Cats must also have licenses, collars and tags, which doesn't happen either.

We have 3 sweet boys who live on the deck and one old guy who graces the deck on occasion to eat- no way you could pet that guy. Then there is the one little lady who lives in the house. We would let the boys in but she can't abide cats. So she is an ailurophobic (fear of cats). The boys will look into the house through the French door and she will spit and hiss at them.

We don't hoard cats. The 3 sweeties that live outside just found us. We had them neutered, rabies shots and dewormed. Now the old man is a whole 'nother thing. We would have to use a live trap and I think he is too smart for that.

Its 3 dogs per residence and they must be licensed and altered. In areas where horses and livestock are allowed the limits are based on the size of your property. People love their pets and many have more animals than the govt says they should, and this probably scares them away from getting them licensed. I'm glad to see that more kittehs will get a chance to find homes.
