(37,457 posts)As you know, the really heavy rain mostly runs off into the creeks and rivers, then out to the ocean eventually unless it gets caught in a lake.

Heavy rainfall does cause other problems in the lower elevations, such as mudslides. Especially in areas that have burned. And there's no shortage of burned areas this year.
So heavy rain has it plusses and minuses.

(2,943 posts)Some weather experts are predicting heavy rainfall this year in California, thanks to an El Niño that many hope will put an end to the historic drought.
This is the Godzilla EL Niño if it matures and comes to fruition, Bill Patzert, a climatologist with NASAs Jet Propulsion Lab, told NBC News last week.
A recent statement released by Californias state climatologist Michael Anderson sings a different tune.
California cannot count on potential El Niño conditions to halt or reverse drought conditions, he wrote. Historical weather data shows us that at best, there is a 50/50 chance of having a wetter winter.
So just how likely is it that this years El Niño will put an end to the drought?
Not very likely, experts told NBC Bay Area.

There's really no alternative. Fingers crossed!!

(7,886 posts)We're still a long way from the drought ending. And even if we get record snow the earth is warmer than it used to be and the snowpack will melt faster.
Thank you for the kind words, optimism is in short supply.
