On the next 4th of July, I will turn 75-years-old. For over half of my life, I have been in elected office, the last 23 as a member of Congress. I love public service and I am proud of what I have accomplished while in office. Im proud to have followed in my fathers footsteps, the late Senator Fred Farr, and Id like to think between the two of us we have had a tremendous impact on this region, the state of California and the country we love so much.
When I first came to Congress Fort Ord had just been closed and the community was going through an economic upheaval. Gangs were starting to take hold in Salinas and agriculture was slowly evolving from canned and frozen packaging to fresh-to-table.
I saw all these challenges as opportunities and I acted on them. Fort Ord is now economically stable and growing. We have new federal resources to fight gangs in Salinas and provide opportunity for our youth. Our agriculture is second to none and is the world leader in fresh, organic produce....
Today, after over 40 years in elected office I am announcing that I will not seek re-election in 2016 and will retire at the end of my current term in January 2017.

One wonders if the dreaded Ro Khanna will stop picking on Mike Honda and throw himself at this opening.

Out of that crop, I'll take Asm. Alejo, who authored our recent minimum-wage bill.
edit: And it looks like Ro will have to keep trying to cannibalize Honda's seat.
With the historic Custom House and the Monterey Bay as a backdrop, Monterey County Deputy District Attorney Jimmy Panetta announced Tuesday that he is running for the Central Coast congressional seat once held by his father, former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
Jimmy Panetta, 45, was joined by his wife, parents and in-laws as he announced he is running for the 20th Congressional District seat being vacated by Rep. Sam Farr....
"We darn well better give back to this country that has given us so much," he said. "They made it clear that the torch of responsibility to this country must pass on for future generations."
Panetta, a retired naval intelligence officer who served in Afghanistan, was the first Democrat to jump into the race. Other Democrats reported to be interested in the post include state Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel; Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Salinas: and Carmel Mayor Jason Burnett.
